About Colon Cancer
Cancer is the name used to describe any disease that can be characterized by
the growth and spread of abnormal cells. These cells interfere with healthy
cells and can cause serious damage throughout the body. If the spread of these
cells cannot be controlled, it often results in death.
Colon cancer attacks the colon and is considered very treatable if it is caught
early. Unfortunately, colon cancer is usually lethal if it is not detected
until the later stages. Since there are virtually no visible or physical
symptoms of the early stages of colon cancer, it is statistically one of the
most fatal forms of cancer.
It is estimated that 150,000 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed
this year in the United States. It is the third most common cancer for both men
and women and is the direct cause of death for over 50,000 Americans every
year.
Surgery is the most common treatment. If detected before spreading, surgical
removal can even be a curative. Again, early detection is your best chance for
survival.
Colon cancer is very real. The worst thing you can do is ignore the threat. One
simple test every year could be the difference between catching it early
instead of too late.
Colon Health Check is an FDA-cleared fecal occult blood test that can be used
at home. The American Cancer Society strongly recommends testing for fecal
occult blood annually.
